Comment on youth transit from Nikki Fortunato Bas

By the 2025 Genesis MICAH Fellow

For over ten years, the Free Youth Bus Pass Program has been at the heart of Genesis’ organizing efforts. During the June 28, 2025 Alameda County Transportation Commission Meeting, Sup. Nikki Fortunato Bas made a comment lifting up the importance of Genesis and community leaders in making the program a success (Click on the link on the left).

As a grassroots organization deeply rooted in Alameda County, Genesis was among the earliest supporters of Measure BB (the program funding mechanism), recognizing early on how critical youth transit access is for our communities.

Genesis is and has been devoted to mobilizing its base to educate voters about the importance of investing in youth transit. Genesis believes that access to reliable transportation is essential for young people to reach school, jobs, internships, and extracurricular opportunities. To better understand the impact, Genesis has conducted focus groups with middle and high school students. We still remember hearing how meaningful and necessary this investment truly helps them. We have learned that Free Youth Bus Pass Program has helped emphasize the importance of including those who may be facing challenges such as suspension or disciplinary issues. These are the youth who need support the most, and a bus pass can make a real difference in helping them stay connected and engaged.

We would like to say congratulations to ACTC and to every individual and organization who made this moment possible. This is not just a win for Genesis, this is a win for every young person in Alameda County. If you would like to join our transit team, contact us at gamaliel.genesisca@gmail.com.

Great to see initiatives that improve youth transit access and create more equitable opportunities for communities. Expanding public transportation can have a lasting positive impact on education, employment, and daily life. At the same time, Content Moderation Services play an important role in keeping online discussions around these initiatives respectful, informative, and free from harmful or misleading content. Safe digital spaces encourage more people to engage in meaningful conversations and support community-driven change.

This is such an inspiring initiative that highlights how access to essential resources can create meaningful opportunities for young people. Programs like this help communities stay connected and supported. Just as accessible transportation is important, reliable services such as Birth certificate Translation can also help individuals navigate education, employment, and other essential opportunities across different communities.

The Free Youth Bus Pass Program is a powerful example of how community advocacy and public investment can create lasting opportunities for young people. The work done by Genesis and community leaders in Alameda County shows the importance of recognizing transportation as more than just a way to travel—it is a pathway that connects students with schools, jobs, internships, extracurricular activities, and essential resources. The insights gathered from middle and high school students also demonstrate how listening to youth voices can help create programs that truly address their needs, especially for those facing challenges that may impact their education and engagement.

Initiatives like this remind us that removing barriers is essential for student success. In the same way that accessible…

This was inspiring to read because transportation access can truly change opportunities for young people. I remember struggling with long commutes during college, especially while handling difficult classes and using take my online statistics course for me support to stay on track academically. Better transit really does make education and work more accessible. Your advocacy work sounds meaningful and community focused.

This post really highlights how access to reliable transit can transform young lives, especially for those facing extra challenges. I remember relying on a similar support system when I was trying to juggle school and part-time work, and it made a huge difference. Around that time, I also leaned on calculus help to keep up with my studies while staying active in the community. It’s a great reminder of how small investments in resources can have big, lasting impacts.
