2022 Summer Genesis Youth Internship

Genesis is searching for talented and hard-working individuals to fill the role of Summer Intern. Successful candidates for this position must be a values-driven, self-motivated, and resourceful team player.

Please note: Genesis follow the Alameda County public health and safety mandates during the COVID19 Pandemic. At this time all of our organizing work is conducted in a manner that adheres to those restrictions.

The Mission of Genesis is to provide a platform so that leaders from our membership base can have a vehicle to affect public policy to address issues of racial, and economic equity. As the Bay Area affiliate of the Gamaliel Network we bring strategy, training and power building to faith and community organizations who are our members. We are the network that hired and trained President Barack Obama to organize in the southside of Chicago.

The Summer Interns will support Genesis by working  in collaboration with the Genesis Staff and Leadership. Depending on the design of the intern experience, Summer Interns can expect to develop the following skills:

  1. A view into the life of a community organizer and how challenging and rewarding engaging people into the work of justice can be.

  2. Performing one-on-one visits that are intentional relationship building dialogues (and the foundation of our organizing) with a broad base of leaders from various Member Congregations and Allies of Genesis.

  3. Research and assessment of an ongoing power analysis on the Genesis Issues. The following issues have active campaigns in Genesis:

    1. Disrupting the School to Prison Pipeline:  focus is on intervening in the criminal justice system in order to disinvest in youth incarceration and focus on community support for youth.

    2. Disability and Transit Justice:  Focus is on building a fully accessible public transit system as a strategy to fight climate change.

  4. Training leadership to build power and affect public policies.

Some of the Genesis projects and tasks that the summer fellow could impact include, but are not limited to:

  1. Deep listening in the community:  hearing from individuals who are affected by a spectrum of issues in our community.

  2. Meeting with elected officials who make decisions that affect our lives.

  3. Social Media engagement

  4. Researching issues and how to make changes in our community.
